Ep. 44 ~ March 2019 ~ Retro Pop Culture Meetup

Not gonna lie, it got a bit CRAZY on this month‘s podcast. With a RETRO theme, the gang discussed all things that made them who they are today, pop culture wise, of course!! With a variety of ages celebrating their childhoods from 1970’s to early 2000’s, we did a ton of reminiscing, and maybe a little arguing, about who’s generation had it best!! From Tintin to Crash Bandicoot to Pokemon to Tomb Raider to Youtube, no pop culture milestone was left unturned. #90skidftw

Talking about how good magazine and mailing lists (like actual mail) were to find out new bands or games from the reviews and DEMO DISKS!!! Aw man. ALSO, how much I dislike video gamer streamers and that there is now a generation who is being raised by them….. *rant* lol

Luke dropping the truth bombs about back in the day going to blockbuster and garage sales picking up random games and movies and not knowing anymore than the blurb on the back. No trailers, no internet. The absolute joy in finding a totally random and new… ahh the memories… Luke, our English friend, if you read this, it has been wonderful having you join us on your backpacking journey. Stay in touch, brother!!!

Ep. 39 ~ Amanda Louise Author Interview ~ Be the Black Sheep

Caught up with author, Amanda Louise, who has been working on her inspirational debut book ‘Be the Black Sheep’!! Had a great time reminiscing about our university days in Hervey Bay, and didn’t realise just how much that time shaped our lives!! We have both retained so many of the lessons learned when we were studying mass media & public relations over 13 years ago(!).

Spoke about what lead Amanda to the exploration and promotion of the ‘Black Sheep’ lifestyle, and why she decided to write the book. We then had a chat about a few of her inspirations, including Walt Disney, Tony Robbins, and Tim Ferriss (author of ‘The Four Hour Work Week).

Amanda has done all the research and ground work for her readers, including attending motivational US style motivational conventions run by Tony Robbins, and the Aussie women’s creative conference, 9 to Thrive. We discussed our shared passion for helping people, and being a part of positive communities!!

Amanda has been working on her social media presence, providing videos, live streams, interviews, and posts designed to help people overcome fear, visualise success, and most of all, that it is ok to be different. Make sure to check out ‘Be the Black Sheep’ today!!

Ep. 37 ~ Mission Impossible: Fallout Post-Cinema Review (In-Car Test)

**PODCAST CONTAINS SPOILERS** Testing out the old audio recorder in the car on the way home from the movies after watching the new Mission Impossible: Fallout!! Calling this test a fail as the audio was really off, so next time we will just have to contain ourselves until we get home (or take some notes or something!). The indicators as we were waiting to turn were just wayyyyy too annoying. And it might be good to have a few minutes to gather our thought for clarity!!

We both really enjoyed the movie, found it had a fast moving and often unpredictable plot, but was perhaps just a little long. The characters were fun, and it was interesting to see Henry Cavill try to break his Superman mold (and why exactly he NEEDED that moustache!).

Ep. 35 ~ Paul Eiding Interview (Comic Book Writer – Blastosaurus, & Voice/Actor – Incredibles 2, Transformers, Ben 10…)

Caught up with one of our best comic con friends, Paul Eiding, to chat about his latest projects!! Chatted about his voice acting role as Reflux in Incredibles 2, working with his family and theatre friends to make massively viral videos (and fund raise for LA park conservation projects!), and the highs and lows of his venture into the world of comic book writing on Blastosaurus, with New Zealand artist, Richard Fairgray.

We also spoke briefly about his voice acting role as Perceptor in the original Transformers cartoons, as Grandpa Max on Ben 10, and his work in video games such as Snake from Metal Gear Solid, the ‘Vault-Tec’ guy from Fallout, the ‘arrow to the knee’ guy from Skyrim, the ‘construct additional pylons’ guy from Starcraft etc etc etc (too many to mention in one pod!). Forgot to chat about his role as Pa Kent in upcoming DC animated movie The Death of Superman… oops, hopefully he will let us call him back another time soon!!

Was lovely to catch up, and we very much appreciated Paul taking time out of his busy schedule to chat to us about all his exciting creative projects!!

Jana & Jess at Free Comic Book Day 2017

*** Heart of Millyera is the first webcomic by Jess Cate and Jana Hoffmann. The story began in 2014, when Jana and Jess were discussing their mutual love for mystical sea-beasties. Millyera was born out of a fascination with the mysterious universe that dwells in the deepest oceans. The world of The Colonies sprung up out of our desire to create a comic with a setting that is both steam-punk, and yet proudly Australian. Ep. 20 ~ Gary Chaloner Interview ~ ACAF 2018

Happy Easter AND Happy Birthday to Aussie comic book legend, Gary Chaloner!!

Paul and I sat down with Gary at ACAF to have a chat about his life in art/comics, going way back to his early art school years, newspaper strip ‘Jeff Little the Smiling Policeman’, his run with imprint Cyclone Comics, learning on the go with the development of the direct comic book market in Australia, Jackaroo, working for publishers in the US, work with Ashley Wood (Judge Dredd, Medieval Spawn, Zombies vs Robots), Darkhorse Downunder – Aussie anthology, work/life/family balance, web comics, and his work with Will Eisner.

There is some wonderful wisdom in this one for anyone working in the comic book industry, especially in Australia, including creating networks to get work, rolling on from project to project, practice makes perfect, talent will only get you so far, and as you already know, you need determination, drive, and a partner who is willing to help make those tough life decisions.

Australian Comic Arts Festival (ACAF) Kid Phantom Q&A panel that turned into a casual chat/podcast on Sunday 11 Feb 2018…

Ep. 12 ~ Zombie Survival Chats ~ ACAF 2018

As we sat in the drawing room at the Australian Comic Arts Festival, the topic soon turned to zombies and survival (AKA why the kids in The Walking Dead are doing it all wrong). Politics were discussed, as were tanks, our own strategies, and a few of the different comic book/tv takes on the issue. Christian Read will probably be ok in his mountain lair, Paul and I are joining the boys from his Thai kickboxing gym who catch fish in the Brisbane River from bows and arrows they make themselves, and joining us at the end there was Trevor Clark… not sure where you are from sir, but god speed!
