Hollywood star Hugh Jackman has recently attended a press conference in Sydney to sizzle the start of filming for the next instalment in the X-Men series, after its delay due to the tsunami in Japan, in 2011.
Be prepared for yet another Origin story, with our reluctant hero journeying to Japan, in the hotly-anticipated sequel to his 2009 superhero blockbuster, Wolverine.
Also in attendance, was Prime Minister Julia Gillard, checking in to ensure the 12.8 million dollar grant for the film is being put to good use.
The NSW state and Australian federal governments have secured a deal with 20th Century Fox to have the Wolverine movie shot locally over 4 to 5 months, bringing some 2000 jobs to Sydney, and over $80 million to the local economy.
Talk soon turned to whether the Prime Minister would have a starring role in the film, with Hugh Jackman jokingly stating that it would not be a traditional role, that she would be more of a stunt double for himself, because of her martial arts background and her handy use of a sword and nun chucks.
With Julia Gillard’s current lack of popularity at the polls, maybe Hollywood is in her future?
Director James Mangold, known for Girl, Interrupted, and Walk The Line, was tighlt ipped as to who would be replacing Jessica Biel as the female lead, in the role of the villainous mutant Viper.
Tipped to take the role is Russian actress Svetlana Khodchenkova, who was last seen playing a defector in the Gary Oldman thriller, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Jackman reported that he has admittedly struggled to get back into shape after packing on the pounds to play Jean Valjean in “Les Miserables”. And that playing Wolverine, one of the most interesting and complex superheroes, has been the backbone of his career. That it is one of the greatest privilidges to be shooting this movie at home.
When asked about the recent Batman shooting tragedy, Hugh said, “All I can echo is the sorrow I feel for the families and the community.’ We would also like to covey our heartfelt condolences to everyone involved in what was such a senseless attack on not only the people affected, but the entire cultural institution of film.’
After their initial pre-production issue’s, filming of the next instalment of the Wolverine series is back on track, with its cinematic release currently expected to be mid 2013.
